Staff at the Dunes Café Waxham Barn are elated after being voted the best Norfolk Café in England’s business Awards.

Carmel Shiggins, co-owner of the business that used to operate from Winterton before the café had to be demolished, paid tribute to the staff. “They are the people that are on the frontline. We’re all working but they’re keeping it going.”

Redevelopment of garage site starts

Café is a winner

CATERS Service Station is being demolished after permission was granted for two three bed chalet-style detached homes on the site in Black Street.

Norfolk County Council Highways originally objected to the development because of concerns about access from Back Path. But the plans were changed to provide driveway parking at the front in Black Street.

There was some anxiety about the homes – originally planned as four-bedroomed properties - being built on contaminated land because of the site’s history as a garage and filling station.

But the borough council’s environmental health department said:  "Following review of the submitted contamination report, Environmental Services is satisfied that the site could be remediated satisfactorily, such that it could be suitable for residential development.”

In a series of conditions the developers have been told they cannot start building until the approved plan to deal with contamination has been carried out in full and a report validating its effectiveness has been backed by the council.

The parish council raised questions about the lack of parking in the original plan. One of the conditions for the approved plan is that driveways in front of the garages have to be at least six metres long to ensure vehicles don’t overhang onto the road.
